If you’ve tried to ship a Rust library to the web, you know the moment. Your code compiles to Wasm, it works in tests, and then you discover you need to write JavaScript to call it from a browser. Not a little JavaScript. A wrapper that manually manages memory, re-encodes strings, translates types, and handles instantiation. For a single console.log, that’s 20-something lines of glue code before you’ve done anything useful.
Mozilla just proposed making that requirement go away.
The proposal is based on the WebAssembly Component Model – a standards-track initiative in the WebAssembly CG that’s been in development since 2021. The pitch is simple: browsers should be able to load a Wasm component directly, bind to Web APIs natively, and run – no JavaScript intermediary required.
The Glue Problem Is Not Small
Wasm’s type system is minimal by design. It knows about integers, floats, and linear memory. Strings don’t exist. DOM nodes don’t exist. The rich object graph that makes up a browser environment doesn’t exist.
When your Rust code calls a Web API, something has to bridge that gap. Today, that something is JavaScript. Every string crossing the Wasm/JS boundary must be encoded into linear memory on one side and decoded back into a JS string on the other. Every function call into the DOM needs a JS wrapper that knows how to translate the Wasm types into what the DOM expects.
This code is tedious enough that nobody writes it by hand. Rust uses wasm-bindgen to generate it. C/C++ uses Emscripten’s embind. Go has TinyGo. Each generates different glue with different compatibility characteristics. None of it is interoperable.
The maintenance burden is real. Library authors shipping Wasm to the web are maintaining two things: the library and the JS wrapper. The wrapper rots with toolchain updates. It requires a separate skill set. The upstream compilers – Clang/LLVM, rustc – don’t want to know anything about JavaScript, which means this work falls to third-party distributions that users have to find, learn, and trust.
Standard rustc with --target wasm32-unknown-unknown produces a Wasm file that fails to load in a browser for reasons that are genuinely hard to debug. The official path is the unofficial path.
There’s a performance cost too. Mozilla ran an experiment using the TodoMVC benchmark in a Rust Wasm framework and measured the overhead of JS glue on DOM operations specifically. Removing the glue layer dropped DOM operation time by 45%. For compute-heavy workloads this barely matters; for UI-intensive applications it’s significant. Engines have been optimising the boundary for years with proposals like JS string builtins, but the fundamental overhead doesn’t go away when every type crossing the boundary needs translation.
What the Component Model Actually Does
The WebAssembly Component Model defines a higher-level packaging format that wraps standard Wasm modules. A component declares its interface – what it imports, what it exports – using a purpose-built IDL called WIT (WebAssembly Interface Types). The types in WIT are richer than raw Wasm: strings, records, variants, resources, streams.
The proposal Mozilla is advancing would extend this to the browser itself. Web APIs – the DOM, fetch, console, WebGL, and so on – would be described in WIT and made natively importable by Wasm components. The browser binds them directly. No JavaScript in the loop.

For hybrid applications – which is most real Wasm usage – the Component Model also handles the other direction. A Rust image decoder could be defined as a component with a typed WIT interface. JavaScript would import it like any other module:

The cross-language interop case is significant. Today, shipping a Rust library usable from JavaScript requires wasm-bindgen plus an npm package containing the generated glue. Under this proposal, the component itself is the distributable artifact. Any language that supports components can consume it, without knowing or caring what language it was written in.
Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Looks
There are a few compounding effects worth naming.
The server/browser gap closes. Wasm is already first-class on servers. Wasmtime, WasmEdge, Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute all run Wasm without JavaScript. WASI (the WebAssembly System Interface) gave server-side Wasm a standardised API surface. The Component Model is, in effect, trying to give browser-side Wasm the same thing. The goal of write-once, run anywhere – server, edge, browser – becomes considerably more realistic.
Standard toolchains become viable. If browsers implement the Component Model natively, upstream compilers can target it directly. You wouldn’t need a third-party distribution to ship a Wasm library to the web. The same compiler that produces a server binary could produce a browser-ready component. That removes the biggest day-one friction point for developers exploring Wasm.
Standardisation replaces balkanisation. The current situation – wasm-bindgen for Rust, Emscripten for C/C++, TinyGo for Go – produces a fragmented ecosystem where Wasm libraries from different languages can’t easily compose. WIT gives all of them a common interface language. A Rust component and a Go component could be linked together, their bindings compatible by definition.
The “you always need to know JavaScript” tax disappears. Today, anyone doing serious Wasm work on the web eventually hits a layer where they have to read or write JavaScript – not because their problem needs JavaScript, but because the plumbing requires it. That’s an unreasonable constraint for languages that have nothing to do with JS.
The Realistic Timeline
This is where optimism has to meet the W3C process.
The Component Model is a standards-track proposal in the WebAssembly CG, in development since 2021. It’s usable today in server runtimes and in browsers via a polyfill (Jco). What doesn’t exist yet is native browser implementation.
Mozilla is working on it. Google has confirmed they are evaluating the Component Model. That’s both major browser engine vendors publicly interested – which matters a lot for standardisation momentum.
What still needs to happen: the WIT-to-WebIDL mapping has to be worked out. WebIDL is the existing language browsers use to define their APIs. It’s expressive, but designed around JavaScript semantics. WIT takes a different approach, and the two don’t map cleanly. One of the original contributors to the interface types proposal noted in the HN discussion that WebIDL is “the union of JS and Web API’s, and while expressive, has many concepts that conflict with [Component Model] goals.” That’s not a small technical problem – it requires careful design or parts of WebIDL need to be re-expressed in a different model.
After that: every major browser has to ship it. After that: toolchains need to adopt it. After that: ecosystem follows.
The HN community reaction is accurately summarised as “cautiously optimistic, sceptical of timeline.” The concern that lands most fairly: the Component Model tooling has been “early days” for a while. One commenter put it well – there’s a risk of “shifting complexity rather than eliminating it.” The Go component example in the current documentation is genuinely messy. For component consumers the experience improves; for component authors, the tooling still needs significant work.
Realistically: if both Mozilla and Google commit resources and the WIT/WebIDL design problems get resolved, you might see experimental browser implementations in 2027-2028. Widespread availability across all browsers follows later. Toolchain adoption runs in parallel but depends on browser support to validate it.

The ESM integration is worth watching near-term. It’s scoped, implementable without the full Component Model, and already being actively worked on. It won’t solve the glue problem, but it removes one layer of friction and signals browser vendors are moving.
Wasm became a platform the day it shipped. It became a server platform the day WASI landed. Making it a first-class browser language closes the loop – and for the first time, the people who need to agree on how are pointing in the same direction.
